Akoya Pearls - Man-made Pearls

Since its origin, the pearls have been an item of pride and dignity for its owners. Their luster, shine and unparalleled beauty ignite the temptations in the mind of the people who just look at it wondering if they were lucky enough to own one.

Pearls have been a prominent item in the jewelry of the rich and famous people who endorse various different brands of pearls varying in colors, size and shape. The unique quality of pearls is that they need no cutting and finishing as they originate as ready to use items.

Pearls are fast gaining popularity among people and almost everyone has a desire to own a pearl necklace, bracelet earrings or complete pearl jewelry sets. However a few of them are lucky enough to own the pure and rare natural pearls. Even the royal queens and famous Celebes can be seen sporting a pearl necklace set together with their own grace making the onlookers gasp with envy.

The rare occurrence of natural pearl combined with increasing demand of them in the market has led to the development of a method to produce artificial pearls which are in no way different from their original counterparts. Pearls can occur in freshwater as well as saltwater making them easy to be produced using artificial procedures. One such variety of pearl which originates in saltwater and is very common and popular with the people due to its beauty and charm is the Akoya pearl. They are mostly popular in the countries like Japan , India and China .

The life span of the saltwater pearls is mostly 120-140 years which makes it a lifetime investment for a person who buys this beauty. However proper care and precautions should be taken while handling them else they may loose their shine and charm or even get damaged and develop cracks on the surface. Some easy and simple steps can guarantee a lifelong beauty of pearls like protecting them from perfumes, cologne, and hair sprays and cleaning them regularly with a soft sponge and hot water. They should always be stored in a gentle tissue or a soft sponge to prevent the damage or scratches on its surface.

Careful shopping of pearls for selecting flawless ones and leaving out the inferior ones together with the gentle handling and following the proper use instructions can guarantee a lifelong pride and possession of an unmatched jewel: the pearl

International Gemstone Trends

With the emerging popularity of gemstones, many consumers who are beginning to form a part of the market for gemstones are looking for answers to various questions with regards to color, cut, price and jewelry styles that are fashionable and trendy.

The fact of the matter is that the gemstone industry is so large and varied that there are various international trends running in at the same time. Additionally, there are many people who tend to have different reasons for purchasing gemstones other than just fashion trends.

Some buy gemstones due to superstitious beliefs and the mystical powers that some of the gemstones are believed to possess. The alexandrite, for example, is known to increase the intuitive powers of the wearer and is believed to help during times of crisis.

The aquamarine brings forth youth and joy, the coral is effective during financial troubles, jade has healing powers, iolite opens the inner eye and increases wisdom, the garnet brings prosperity, cat’s eye helps in warding away bad fortune and much more.

The popularity of certain gemstones is impacted significantly due to these beliefs. The blue sapphire is one such example where people believed that it can either be extremely positive for the wearer or extremely negative, causing accidents and threats to life in some cases. Since the preference for specific gemstones is based more on individual requirements as against a fashion trend, many of these gems have their own niche customers who require it for various purposes.

There are also people who prefer to choose their gemstones on the basis of the colors that they fancy. Given that the awareness of gemstones is increasing there is knowledge about the fact that there are various kinds of gemstones. Till a few years back, women thought and talked only about the diamond when gemstones were discussed. While the diamond has carved (no pun intended) an elite niche of itself, other precious gemstones like the ruby, emerald, garnets and more have moved in.

With additional knowledge also came an understanding of the fact that each gemstone could be available in various colors and that each color has its own uniqueness. People therefore chose their gemstones based on their favorite colors and the dress for the occasion (especially for the not-so-expensive gemstones). From saturated shades of green to vibrant red, blue sapphires, dazzling yellow and even mauve, each one can have their pick from rubies, emeralds, sapphires, garnets, tourmalines, amethyst, tanzanite, corals and more.

In spite of the increasing popularity of gemstones, they are not readily available in all markets. And therefore the more adventurous and innovative gemstone wearers tend to buy what is available in the market. But the connoisseurs, experts and those who have been buying gemstones for some time tend to collect gemstones based on their uniqueness and rarity.

But internationally, gemstone trends and fashions tend to follow haute couture. When the release of fall winter collections brings forth dark earthy shades of brown as the trend for the season, experts offer expert advice to match these with designer gemstones like the ‘champagne’ diamond, tiger’s eye, fire opal or the yellow brown topaz. Summer time brings about lighter and more pastel hues that can be accentuated by bright transparent pink tourmalines or sapphires to light blue sapphires and mauve amethysts.

When it comes to the cut, standard cuts and classic styles have made way for fancy cuts like the briolette teardrop and checkerboard facets. These are being used in necklaces and other jewellery items like earrings and even bracelets and rings. Arguably, the standard round, oval and more recent rectangular cuts may never die, fancy cuts are preferred these days since they are uncommon and stylish. The brilliance of these cuts is unmatched and far superior to the classic cuts that were popular in the yesteryears.

Even though availability of the product locally may be an issue, those who are mesmerized by the beauty of gemstones and their variety can source these from the Internet if they are not available locally. Even manufacturers and marketers who are involved with the industry and want to source roughs need to just access the Internet to find various providers across the world be it in South Africa, Tanzania, Europe, Sri Lanka or the Indian subcontinent

Dubai to host World Pearl Forum

The Dubai Pearl Exchange, a subsidiary of the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC), announced that it would host a World Pearl Forum, with the objective of bringing together the global pearl sector, and addressing ways to grow the worldwide market for pearl jewellery.

The initiative, sponsored by global investment company Dubai World, is in accordance with DMCC’s continuing effort to revitalize the global pearl trade, and build on Dubai’s historic status as the pearl center of the Gulf. “The objective behind the first-ever World Pearl Forum is to create a long-term platform for international debate on how to further develop the pearl sector globally through a cohesive approach to educating consumers and fostering demand for pearls.

Through the Forum, the Dubai Pearl Exchange plans to unite the industry by highlighting areas of opportunity as well as identifying integrated programs that will involve all stakeholders of the global pearl trade,” said Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, chairman of Dubai World and executive chairman of DMCC. The event will be held at the Atlantis hotel, Palm Jumeirah from 17-18 February, 2009. The World Pearl Forum will see participation from more than 200 leading pearl specialists from across the world. Senior representatives from pearl producers, national pearl bodies, certification specialists, and jewellery trade experts will gather in Dubai-one of the first pearl capitals of the world-to address the opportunities and debate the latest challenges in the global pearl sector.

“There is currently an unprecedented opportunity for Dubai to take a leadership role in shaping the global pearl sector, while at the same time underscoring Dubai’s heritage as the traditional pearl capital of the world. Globally pearls have witnessed a recent resurgence, and Dubai needs to leverage this development to drive international interest in pearl trading,” said Sulayem.

The inaugural World Pearl Forum will address several fundamental issues including the need for greater consumer understanding about the value of pearls, and ways in which the industry must unite to drive consumer demand. Pearl producers and government pearling bodies are also expected to present case studies on their growth and strategies to increase pearl sales.

The event is also sponsored by jewellery companies Rosy Blue and Damas. Confirmed speakers for the conference include Nicholas Paspaley, executive chairman, Paspaley; Robert Wan, chairman, Robert Wan Tahiti; Noriyuki Morita, president, K Mikimoto & Co Ltd; Robert Cepek, MD, Iridesse (part of Tiffany & Co); and Jack Ogden, chief executive, Gemological Association of Great Britain

Unique Engagement Rings

When you are shopping for an engagement ring and jewelers start talking about 'certified loose diamonds, 'what does that mean? Essentially, it means that the diamonds have been examined and graded by professional gemologists working under laboratory conditions, then are turned over to independent appraisal firm at which a final monetary value is determined. Ideally, these examinations and appraisals have been performed by firms that operate independently of a particular diamond merchant or retailer for reasons that should be obvious. Read on and find out how these gems become certified loose diamonds.

The Gemologist's Job

A gemologist is someone who is typically trained and has a degree in geology, or rock science. As such, this person is quite knowledgeable about minerals of all kinds.

The job of the gemologist is not to place a monetary value or price on gems. It is to assign a grade. To do this, the gemologist must evaluate, measure and grade diamonds in objective terms, examining it for:

- Carat

- Clarity

- Color

Carat is a unit of weight and mass, roughly equivalent to 0.2 grams. Clarity and color also determine the diamond's grade; a diamond with visible flaws will receive a much lower grade than one that is crystal clear, and some diamond colors ?" such as pink and purple ?" are exceedingly rare. Some diamond colors such as pink and purple are much more valuable that white or bluish diamonds.

The Appraisal

While the gemologist only assigns a grade to the diamond, the appraiser uses this information in addition to some more subjective criteria in determine the gem's monetary value. One of the qualities that determines this is cut.

Princess Cut Diamonds

Princess cut diamond engagement rings have been a popular choice for many years. This is an oval cut that is used to accentuate the diamond's fire and brilliance ?" in short, to make it sparkle. Princess cut diamonds have many facets to reflect the light and require a great deal of skill to do properly. Incidentally, despite the name you'll find these cuts mounted on men's' diamond rings as well as women's princess cut diamond engagement rings.

Emerald cut diamonds are quite different from those used in princess cut diamond engagement rings and other pieces. Emerald cut diamonds accentuate clarity more than fire; they do not sparkle as brilliantly. One can however peer into the very depths of emerald cut diamonds. These are actually more popular for mens diamond rings than princess cut diamonds.

When the mens diamond ring or women's engagement ring is mounted with certified loose diamonds, you are assured of maximum value. Certified loose diamonds come to the jeweler with a certificate of authenticity, which you have a right to examine when considering a jewelry purchase.

Tend to Your Gemstones

#

Store your gemstones: Jewels need space to remain free of chips. Store gemstones individually in soft cloth pouches and prevent jewels from bumping against one another.
#

Clean your gemstones regularly: Dust, skin oil and other unclean substances can cause your gemstones to lose their sparkle. Clean them from time to time in soap and water. Then let them air dry and polish them with a soft cloth.
#

Remove dirt from gemstones: Occasional brushing with a worn, soft-bristled toothbrush can help remove dirt from between crevices. For more resistant blemishes, use a weak solution of ammonia and water (about one part to four parts) and a soft brush.
#

Respect metal jewelry settings: Treat metal settings gently. Gold can scratch. Although four-prong, six-prong, and low-profile channel or bezel settings offer your gemstone more protection than other settings, you should ask your jeweler to make sure your gemstones sit tight in their settings to help prevent stones from falling out.
#

Know when to have a pro clean your gemstones: Annual checkups with a jeweler help keep your gemstones clean and properly situated in their settings. A jeweler can clean gems with steam or ultrasound, though ultrasound can make internal fissures or flaws worse

How to Buy Indian Jewelry

Step1Get looking. If you live in a part of the county where there is a significant Indian population, you can probably find stores specializing in Indian goods nearby. Searching the web is another way to browse for jewelry from India, especially if you live in an area where there are few Indians.

Step2Look at quality. Indian jewelry can come in a variety of jewels and metals such as gold and diamond. If you don't want to make a huge investment but love the look of Indian jewelry, look into buying Indian-inspired jewelry made from less expensive materials such as sterling silver and synthetic gems.

Step3Think about where you want to wear your jewelry. Indian jewelry can be made to wear on almost any part of the body.

Step4Consider the meaning. Since jewelry is a part of Indian culture and many of its religions, you might want to check and see if the piece you are interested in has any meaning to others. To Indians, the jewelry can be purely for looks, or it can have religious connections to different stages of life.

How to Buy Platinum Jewelry

• Due to its similar appearance and lower price, many people choose white gold jewelry over platinum.

• Don't forget to request fine jewelry cleaner in order to clean and polish your platinum jewelry on a regular basis

Step 1
Look for platinum markings. The marking will let you know how much of the piece is made of platinum. For example, 950 pt means that 950 parts per thousand of the piece is made of pure platinum. The balance is from other metals.

Step2
Expect to pay more for platinum. Due to its durability, platinum jewelry costs more than white or yellow gold pieces.

Step3
Get an appraisal. Since platinum jewelry tends to be expensive, it is important to get a certificate of its value at the time of purchase.

Step4
Choose platinum to accentuate the appearance of diamonds. Diamonds on platinum create an elegant look.

Step5
Purchase a jewelry box or request a soft cloth pouch to store the platinum jewelry. You need to keep platinum separate from other jewelry to prevent scratching.

The worlds first diamond from a umbilical cord

Having made dozens of 'Memorial Diamonds', I was chatting idly to my laboratory technicians about 'what else can we make diamonds out of'? Apart from the ashes and hair, the lads suggested both hoof and horn but surprisingly the umbilical cord of a baby, which apparently is rich in basic carbon and may be able to be used.
With this in mind, I spoke to the editor of Funeral Service Times who was willing to write a feature story mentioning this idea and a request for a potential donor.
Not only did I receive a call from a potential donor - a funeral director who's wife had suffered neo-natal deaths in the past and who was now pregnant again - it turned out that his practice had actually cremated all of my Aunties, Uncles and Grand Parents over the past years. We agreed to keep in touch.
Almost on the due date, he called to say his wife was possibly in labour and being cared for at Hope Hospital, in Manchester adding - "what should I do with the cord if I can get it"?. Being a first for all of us, I suggested he get the nurses to put it straight in their deep-freeze - ready for a collection once I had been in touch with our lab'. We all laugh now, but the best at the time was a 'TupperWare' box............
Jessica was delivered on the 27th of January 2008 at just 4 lbs 11ozs - thankfully alive and well - though the situation was very delicate to say the least!!!
We collected the frozen cord and kept it frozen for a while whilst taking advise from the lab'. It was eventually treated [sorry, can't disclose how] to become pure carbon. The lab' then used this carbon in our usual process when making blue diamonds - though with this 'world first' we all had to take extra special care.
The HHHP process we use, runs under a pressure around 10,000 tons per square inch at temperatures of 1300c for a calculated long period of weeks - almost under constant supervision. Eventually the raw crystal emerged and the cutter with many years experience chose the clearest section from which to cut the biggest clear diamond possible. After polishing we now have a 0.5 carat Aqua Blue brilliant cut diamond which was almost flawless, icy blue and very clear.
During this lengthy wait, we were all under 'tenter hooks' as so much could have gone wrong, but thankfully all has turned out well. The donors called to ask if we could name the diamond - and so we have - The Jessica Diamond, first in the world..

Pretty in Pink" Necklace

My "Pretty in Pink" necklace (page 34) wasn't a favorite when I made it, but I've been wearing it a lot lately. It's light and colorful — in summer, a welcome change from all my chain jewelry.

I bought the pink beads from The Beadin' Path, whose website offers an amazing selection of Lucite. You can search by color, or buy bead mixes. They have beads in fruit, shell, and flower shapes, but of course I prefer the oval-shaped fuchsia jelly beans. Smooth and candy-like: yum. They also possess a shimmer that makes them look especially luminous.

To keep the necklace from looking too cutesy, I strung the beads with gunmetal spacers from Vintaj. Jane, who's a BeadStyle editor, suggested that I add chain, which gives you different ways to wear the necklace. Also, that makes the piece less bulky at the back of your neck. By the way, I spend lots of time in Jane's office. Not only does she give fabulous design advice, she's also a sympathetic listener about matters of the heart.
